WoodworkingI have tried all the fancy ones. Keep coming back to the best. Nothing special just works.Easy to useIt’s a handy little tool. Seems like it will not last long as the material is pretty light weight, but it should get the job done.Great buy, perfect for a slick scribe when fitting wood to fit. Just wish I could find it when I need itSome things don’t need alteringThe scriber doesn't really grip the pencil too well. Or at least the bolt and nut used to tighten the legs of the compass is also involved with tightening the grip on the pencil. So if you want to loosen the legs to adjust radius, it also loosens the grip on the pencil. This can probably be fixed (eg. pliers to crimp the pencil holder tighter to the pencil). But next time, I'd rather spend a little more and not have to troubleshoot this.I thought I was getting a good deal on a compass, but this tool is very low quality and in my opinion, is not worth even one dollar. I didn't notice when I removed the compass from its packaging, but the holder portion of the compass was squashed down, making it impossible to insert a pencil . Since I needed this compass for a fencing project I was knee-deep in the middle of, to scribe the fence bottom to contour to uneven ground, I tapped a Phillips-head screw driver through the pencil holder with a hammer and was able to open the holder enough to insert a pencil. The gold-tone metal is very flimsy, and I don't imagine this tool will last long, but it was inexpensive and will serve its intended purpose for my fencing project. I figured this tool would be better than holding a pencil in my hand and using my index finger as a scribe, and would be a nice addition to my tool box, but not so much.I was wary buying this, as it is one of the cheapest compasses listed for carpentry. However, I don't need anything fancy or expensive for a limited amount of DIY. The main reason for being cautious was a review saying how difficult it is to get a pencil in, and that it is not tight enough to stop movement. This was not a problem for me. You simply loosen the Wing Nut as much as needed, and tighten when a standard pencil is in place. The Wing Nut is secure, so you can tighten it sufficiently to hold the pencil and ensure the compass won't move. I can't really see how such a simple mechanism would fail, unless either the thread was damaged. I would happily buy another if I lost this one.The butterfly nut is what makes this perfect once space of the required scribe distance is set, tighten the nut and it won’t shift like all other cheap scribes! My scribes have gone from so/so to near on perfect every single time due to this 100% worth the money so much so I bought 3 and gifted 2 to my mates who are furniture installers and they love them! This tool is soo simple and useful to have. Can scribe to almost any size within the length of the tool. Prefer this over the Trend scribing tool.Bought this scribing tool for a job i was working on and yes it does the job well but i find no matter how much i tighten the wing nut it still isnt just quite stiff enough and can move if not careful, so just take your time.Seems a good little scribe but finding pencils that actually fit without seriously bending or misshaping the holder is a problem I’ve tried various brands all the same ended up sanding them down to fit! That can’t be correct
